چکیده

We explore how the local environment is related to the redshift, type, and luminosity of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Recent simulations and observations are converging on the view that the extreme luminosity of quasars is fueled in major mergers of gas-rich galaxies. In such a picture, quasars are expected to be located in regions with a higher density of galaxies on small scales where mergers are more likely to take place. However, in this picture, the activity observed in low-luminosity AGN is due to secular processes that are less dependent on the local galaxy density. To test this hypothesis, we compare the local photometric galaxy density on kiloparsec scales around spectroscopic Type I and Type II quasars to the local density around lower luminosity spectroscopic Type I and Type II AGN. To minimize projection effects and evolution in the photometric galaxy sample we use to characterize AGN environments, we place our random control sample at the same redshift as our AGN and impose a narrow redshift window around both the AGN and control targets. We find that higher luminosity AGN have more overdense environments compared to lower luminosity AGN on all scales out to our 2 h 70 Mpc limit. Additionally, in the range 0.3 6 z 6 0.6, Type II quasars have similarly overdense environments to those of bright Type I

Active Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey I: The Spectroscopically Unremarkable Population of the Local Universe

In a series of papers based on the FIRST and Sloan Digital Sky Surveys (SDSS), we investigate the local population of star-forming galaxies and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in order to clarify the link between these two types of activity, to explore the dependence of their features on the properties of their host galaxies, and to examine the role of the environment in triggering activity. In th...

The soft X-ray properties of quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

We use the ROSAT All Sky Survey (RASS) to study the soft X-ray properties of a homogeneous sample of 46,420 quasars selected from the third data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Optical luminosities, both at rest-frame 2500Å (L2500) and in [OIII] (L[OIII]) span more than three orders of magnitude, while redshifts range over 0.1 < z < 5.4. We detect 3366 quasars directly in the ob...

THE FIELD X-RAY AGN FRACTION TO z = 0.7 FROM THE CHANDRA MULTIWAVELENGTH PROJECT AND THE SLOAN DIGITAL SKY SURVEY

We employ the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChaMP) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to study the fraction of X-ray-active galaxies in the field to z = 0.7. We utilize spectroscopic redshifts from SDSS and ChaMP, as well as photometric redshifts from several SDSS catalogs, to compile a parent sample of more than 100,000 SDSS galaxies and nearly 1,600 Chandra X-ray detections. quasars in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release

We have compiled a sample of 21 low redshift (z . 0.3), luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) with large Balmer decrements (Hα/Hβ > 7) using the galaxy and QSO catalogs of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release. Using this sample we attempt to determine the fraction of quasars with large internal absorption. We find that these AGN have Strong [O III] λ5007 and broad Hα emission, and th...
